Swimming Pool Shock Treatment - When Is It Needed?

Our swimming pools become a beacon for relaxation on these lovely hot summer days. It is just great to lie back and enjoy the sunshine and the sparkling clean water. Due to the constant and heavy use of our residential pools during the vacation time it is important to consider the natural pollution resulting from this wear and tear. Sadly, the clean water does not happen all on its own or by osmosis.

Cleaning a pool by hand or with an automatic pool cleaner is not always enough to keep a pool sanitized. Sometimes pool shock treatment is needed to completely sanitize a pool. Many things including rainfall and sunlight reduce the ability of chlorine to sanitize a pool totally. Other things such as body oils, cosmetics, old skin cells, perspiration, ammonia and even lawn feeding chemicals can contaminate a pool. This is "shocking" news!

So what is Pool Shock? - it is not about the shock you may have received from this last revealing paragraph. It is about reversing the condition of your pool so that the water is clean, safe, and sparkling, ready to use. This is done by giving your pool a special pool shock treatment.

It is important to test the ph of your pool prior to carrying out a pool shock. Using the pool test kit will help you identify the need to use this type of treatment as well as any appearance of cloudy or green tinged water. When a pool is shocked it oxidizes contaminants in the pool and restores chlorine levels to normal. It also allows the chlorine to get rid of algae that can accumulate in a pool.  Under normal circumstances a pool should be shocked every other week. When there are heavy periods of rain or long periods of very warm weather a pool should be shocked every week.

There are several types of pool shock treatment. Purchase the appropriate pool shock products required for your type of pool. If you have a chlorine based filter system or non chlorine one there are pool shock treatments suitable for each type of cleaning system. There are also powdered shock treatments and liquid style ingredients available and you need to discuss this with the professional pool product retailers to find the best answer for your needs.

There are very strict methods of pool shock treatment and these should be followed carefully. Educate yourself in the use of chemicals and never just throw the shock ingredients into the pool without care.  Granules must be dissolved prior to being poured into the pool and when mixing the pool shock chemical always pour water over chemicals never the other way around. The pool filter needs to be placed in the recirculate mode while the treatment is in progress, and when completed, returned to normal mode. If using liquid pool shock chemicals the filter should be run for at least twenty-four hours after the treatment has been completed.
